The laboratory has in the past ten years developed an interest and expertise in the diagnosis of Blastocystis hominis and Dientamoeba fragilis, parasites which have an undecided role as pathogens, but which are incriminated in chronic bowel conditions such as Irritable Bowel Syndrome. The laboratory has developed a postal test kit for parasites, which physicians can provide to patients allowing them to return their specimens directly to the laboratory, and which has a high sensitivity for the detection of parasites, including B. hominis and D. fragilis. If you require more information about this service please contact us on john.williams@lshtm.ac.uk or telephone +44 020 (7)927 2318 or +44 020 (7)927 2427; fax +44 020(7)637 0248

Reporting of all results is made directly to the physician and patients can only obtain tests through a physician or certain other registered health practitioners; the laboratory is unable to deal directly with patients.

The laboratory also has considerable expertise in the diagnosis of intestinal parasites of primates and provides a service to veterinarians looking after these animals both in captivity and the wild.

For UK NHS and HPA laboratories most of our services are without charge; private charges are obtainable on request.
